Issue 02

“Mercy constitutes the fundamental content of the messianic message of Christ and the constitutive power of His mission. His disciples and followers understood and practiced mercy in the same way. Mercy never ceased to reveal itself, in their hearts and in their actions, as an especially creative proof of the love which does not allow itself to be “conquered by evil,” but overcomes “evil with good.” The genuine face of mercy has to be ever revealed anew. In spite of many prejudices, mercy seems particularly necessary for our times.” - JPtG, Rich in Mercy

Issue 02 is finally here, thank God, thanks to his mercy. Without mercy, we are lost. Today I was told that prisoners on death row do not deserve mercy, and I wondered to myself, “but who does?”

Issue 01

January 15th, 2008  |  Published in FrontPage Article

What is our hope? Pope Benedict XVI, in his encyclical Spe Salvi (Saved by Hope), reminds us that Christ alone is our hope - without God we remain hopeless. Though the world puts its hope in science, progress, and man, the People of God put their trust in Christ’s unconditional love - a love sealed upon the cross.

The Catholic Blues is a monthly online magazine that needs your stories - stories that are Catholic, personal, and challenging. We know that life isn’t ‘nice’, nor ‘fair’. There are Blues. There are crosses. But even amidst sorrow, our hope springs forth as songs of praise and worship.

Each month of the Catholic Blues brings five different articles, all submitted by Catholics from around the world, all focused upon one theme centering upon a document of our Church. This month, we focus upon Hope, as taught by Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Spe Salvi.

Each article allows you to leave your comments, and the most thoughtful ones will be included in the print-edition of The Catholic Blues that will be released at the end of the month. Moreover, send in your own stories - about Sex (family, community, and yes, sex), about Poverty (material and spiritual), about Violence (inside and outside us), and about Beauty (fiction, poetry, art). And finally, help to collaborate on Dogma, to spread the Gospel of God’s love - mankind’s only true hope.

About Us

The Catholic Blues grips Dogma like a one-eyed harmonica-playing prophet, shrieking high-pitched notes of compassion for the poverty stricken, bending low notes of anguish for a world gone crazy on sex, riffing in time to the march of the victorious lamb of nonviolence, and fading to the beauty of the Catholic imagination. The Catholic Blues knows one thing: Christ saves + pain is joy.
